Daryl Sherman Trio

Daryl Sherman Trio

A sparkling mainstay of Manhattan nightlife, singer/pianist Daryl Sherman is equally at home in the world of jazz and cabaret. Internationally acclaimed for a stellar 14-year run at the Waldorf Astoria, she played Cole Porter's Steinway (pictured) and has headlined the annual Cole Porter Festival in his hometown - Peru, Indiana. Her latest CD, Mississippi Belle celebrates Porter in a New Orleans setting. Daryl's been a favourite at New York’s legendary night spots, The Algonquin Oak Room, Feinstein's at the Regency, Rose Hall. With early stints at Sinatra hangouts like Jilly's, Eddie Condon's, Michael's Pub, Iridium or Shanghai Jazz, there's hardly a New York jazz joint, supper club or hotel in which Daryl hasn’t featured. She last played at SMJ in March 2008 and we are delighted to welcome her back to Southport.

Karen Sharp and Robert Fowler

Karen Sharp and Robert Fowler

From an early love of Dexter Gordon whilst studying at the RNCM, through a three year stint with the Humphrey Lyttelton band, far East touring with Nikki Iles, a raft of festival appearances with America’s cream of mainstream jazz and the very successful launch of her own quartet, Karen Sharp has developed an unmistakable rich tenor tone which has propelled her to two British Jazz Tenor Sax Awards. This will be her first gig at SMJ. Robert Fowler, long time stalwart of the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and frequent SMJ visitor with Alan Barnes’ bands, doubling on tenor and clarinet, has a tenor tone influenced by Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, a perfect foil for Karen. The two have inevitably teamed up to record and tour with a pad of tunes from that iconic Al Kohn-Zoot Sims partnership. With this exceptional pairing and the backing of one of best and hardest swinging trios in the jazz fraternity, this gig promises to be something special.
