Steve Melling Trio with special guest Nigel Hitchcock

Steve Melling is best known at SMJ for time with the late Martin Drew’s New Jazz Couriers. An amazingly dextrous and swinging pianist who alto star Pete King said was ’the only UK guy who can really do the Bud Powell stuff!’ He has worked with jazz giants like Elvin Jones, Phil Woods and Benny Golson. He has recently joined the European Jazz Ensemble. Drummer Miles Levin will be joining Steve, Pete King and Alan Skidmore next year in a new band formed to celebrate the Work of Elvin Jones and Martin Drew. He has worked recently with Steve Troman, Edgar Macias, Paul Dunmail and Soweto Kinch at major festivals and in the studio. Andrew Cleyndert has to be the best known UK bassist at our club. Although famous for his long association with Stan Tracey’s bands, he is in fact first call bassist in several ensembles as well as a record producer with his own label and a supreme bass soloist. Steve’s trio will create a programme around pieces by Shorter, Coltrane and Monk with some Melling originals.

Their special guest Nigel Hitchcock is rated by many as the UK’s leading alto saxophonist. Now back in London following a stint in Scotland, he alternates between jazz gigs, touring with Tom Jones, George Michael and Mark Knopfler, studio work, writing and arranging.
