The Music for Life Big Band

With special guest Mike Walker
In 2012/13, twelve contemporary jazz composers were commissioned to write an original piece of music for the Music For Life Big Band, a youth jazz orchestra for 12-18 year olds run by Alastair McWilliam of ‘Music For Life’, a not for profit organisation delivering music tuition in Cheshire. Under Alastair's direction, the big band has been running for over ten years and remains the foremost youth jazz orchestra for music students in Cheshire. The commission’s project was led by Musical Director, Jo McCallum and features guitarist Mike Walker, internationally respected musician, composer, teacher and currently member of the world famous jazz super-group The Impossible Gentlemen.

The Liane Carroll Trio

featuring Roger Carey (bass) and Mark Fletcher (drums)
Since her first (of several) visits to SMJ 10 years ago, pianist, singer, songwriter Liane Carroll has achieved international fame for both performance and composition in the jazz world and beyond with a string of awards for her songs and recordings. Her latest album ‘Ballads’ which includes strings by the City of Prague Philharmonic, was arranged for her by Grammy winner Chris Walden. We heard tonight’s trio in April at Wakefield Jazz Club and it is just superb.
